Structurelle Structural Engineers

Richmond Hill, Bath

This project, for a luxurious four-bedroom house with basement, separate garage and workshop/studio is located on the site of a group of 13 former 1960s garages. The sloping site has a 40m-long retaining wall of low quality, without foundations on the upslope, which had to remain at all costs since it retained neighbouring gardens and structures upslope. Contiguous piling was specified for the temporary works to allow the wall to remain intact and unaffected by major excavations, while providing protection for the contractor during excavation work to accommodate the basement structure.

A “structural path” along the length of the site was cast to fit the tight space between the new buildings and the wall, thus providing essential structural stability for the wall in the permanent case.
