Somerfoss, Oakhill

This project involved the addition of extensions to an existing hybrid 1970s building which had been built into a quarry. The original building was a mix of timber framing with masonry "cores" for stability. Part of the extension plans involved two side wings. These two-storey spaces, wedge shaped on plan, were designed to add depth to a very shallow original build and to improve the entrance elevation. A further extension involved adding another storey for a master bedroom on top of the existing kitchen, to take advantage of fabulous valley views.

The new side extensions were timber framed and glazed. The extension over the kitchen involved a lightweight but complex steel picture frame arrangement to give stability.
