Vicarage, Widcombe, Bath

Beyond the old vicarage is a massive masonry retaining wall supporting the highway below Widcombe Crescent. The new development involves a 2 storey masonry extension to the existing house which spans the space between the vicarage and the retaining wall. Past attempts to strengthen the wall have been almost completely ineffective, and a major function of the new extension is to replace these older buttresses by building lateral strength into the floors and walls of the extension. This will provide the support required to ensure the future stability of the wall.

The existing boundary retaining walls have suffered the forces of trees in close proximity and now display a substantial lean. The proposal for strengthening these boundary walls is to us soil nails through the existing walls on a close grid.
